Battleground is a series of turn-based computer wargames developed and published by TalonSoft for Microsoft Windows between January 1996 and 1999. Nine games were released in the series, each based on a different historical battle.

It simulated combat at the 1861 First Battle of Bull Run and the 1862 Second Battle of Bull Run, using both a video version of miniature wargaming and board gaming. Terrain hex maps are 3D or 2D with various scales and sizes.
The basic platform for the Battleground series involves individual infantry and cavalryregiments, artillery batteries, and commanders. All are rated for strength, firepower, weaponry, morale, and movement. As a unit takes fire, it may become fatigued, disordered, or routed to the rear. Players compete against the computer's artificial intelligence or against another player via modem. Players may try a variety of individual scenarios, or refight the entire battle of First or Second Bull Run (known as Manassas in the South). Players can also fight the related skirmishes of Blackburn's Ford and Brawner's Farm (also known as Groveton). A Fog of War option enhances playing against the computer, as it hides units that are not in direct view of the enemy.
The game features video clips of battle reenactments, as well as Civil War music by folk singer Bobby Horton.

Battleground 9: Chickamauga is the ninth game to be released in the Battleground series. It was developed and published by TalonSoft and released in 1999.

Reception[edit]
PC Gamer US nominated Bulge-Ardennes and Gettysburg for its 1995 'Best Wargame' award, although they lost to Steel Panthers.[4]
The three Battleground games of 1996--Shiloh, Antietam and Waterloo—collectively won Computer Games Strategy Plus's wargame of the year award for that year.[5]
Waterloo and Antietam were runners-up for Computer Game Entertainment's 1996 'Best War Game' prize, which ultimately went to Tigers on the Prowl 2. The magazine's editors called both games 'top-notch', and summarized Antietam as 'the best iteration yet of TalonSoft's successful Civil War game system.'[6]
The Battleground series, collectively, was named the 75th best computer game ever by PC Gamer UK in 1997. The editors called it 'a fine expose of table top wargaming on the PC'.[7]

Unlike the very rushed first East Front game, East Front II actually is a decent wargame and a loyal continuation of the series. There are several major and minor changes that comprise the differences between these two games. The major change players will notice is that there is a lot more stuff included in the game. The manual is bigger, reflecting the barbs players hurled when confronted by the thin documentation in the original East Front. This problem was partially, but not completely, corrected with the Campaign CD1.
There are 52 additional scenarios, two types of campaign game (West Front’s fixed linked campaigns in addition to the old dynamic campaign), and a pre-battle set up in dynamic campaign missions. The minor changes include graphics updates (winter and late war camouflage), mine clearing, airborne and glider units, and air support listings. Lifted largely from West Front, the synergistic effect of these improvements is greater than the sum of its parts.
The most important and noticeable change is the dynamic campaign game set-up function. Exactly like West Front, players can now reposition their command’s forces within “bounds” before beginning the battle. The incredibly annoying and historically inaccurate problem of having units of different commands intermixed and scattered all over the map is thus put back in the player’s hands. Previously, it could take five or more turns to rally forces, put them in command control and supply, and then gain contact with the enemy. As time is often the key variable in combat, this could make the difference between victory and defeat. The addition of the linked campaign game is a nice feature for those players who don’t aspire to front level command but who want the challenge of attempting to tactically and operationally improve on history.
Some of the smaller additions are useful for “what if” scenario design. Using the scenario editor, all sorts of historical or hypothetical options abound. For example, East Front II makes it possible to design a German airborne and amphibious assault across the Volga at Stalingrad to silence the Soviet artillery. The Soviet drops in the Dnieper bend in 1943 are another option, as are the hypothetical deep drops in support of Operation Bagration or in the Oder crossing. Overall it is a good package for a wargame. These numerous changes add depth, variation, and richness to the original East Front engine.
